Managing Director

The Managing Director is responsible for defining and implementing the cultural, economic and artistic project elaborated in liaison with the Director of Music and the Director of Ballet, who are under his (her) authority. Within the framework of “Opéra National” accreditation, he (she) ensures the promotion both of works from the repertory and contemporary compositions, in particular by commissioning works from composers and choreographers, and plays his (her) role in national and international coproduction networks. He (she) also endeavours to develop a cultural and artistic education policy designed to facilitate broader access to the programme for all members of the public. 

He (she) is also in charge of all the (administrative, financial, technical and managerial) aspects of the strategic leadership of the Opéra National de Bordeaux, within the guidelines defined by the Board (City of Bordeaux, French Ministry of Culture and Communication, Aquitaine Region). 

SKILLS AND PROFILE REQUIRED 

He (she) must demonstrate strong artistic skills as well as a detailed understanding of the institutional stakeholders and must have: 

 

  • perfect familiarity with professional networks in opera, orchestral music and choreography, nationally and internationally, 
  • successful experience of leading large-scale cultural projects in a similar or identical environment, 
  • an original and innovative vision of opera, orchestral music, choreography and the theatre, 
  • an ability to plan changes to the project and operations of the Opéra in a tight financial context, 
  • strong skills in project and multidisciplinary team management, 
  • experience of labour relations dialogue in a public or private context, 
  • experience of relations with State, local authorities and public partners, 
  • experience in establishing and running a patronage and sponsorship strategy, 
  • the ability to speak French and other languages, including English.
