Electrical sauna heater HUUM Drop designed by Mihkel Masso, a product design student at the Estonian Academy of Arts has won a famous international Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015. This is the fifth Red Dot Award won by Estonian designers.

“Being awarded the Red Dot Award is great news, because Mihkel Masso’s sauna heater is an excellent example of how a smart product design can give completely new quality to familiar everyday objects. We are glad that this has been noted internationally and on such a high level,” said Veronika Valk, the Architecture and Design Adviser of the Ministry of Culture. “Estonia has received Five Red Dot awards by now. To me it speaks volumes about the high level of Estonian design as well as design education,” added Valk.

Sauna heater Drop, produced by the Estonian company HUUM OÜ and designed by Mihkel Masso, was created within the framework of the joint development project between the product design department of the Estonian Academy of Arts and HUUM OÜ and was also supported by Enterprise Estonia.

Red Dot design award, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, is the most prestigious design award in the world. In addition to product design, the Red Dot Award covers also the categories of design concept and communication design.

Estonians who have previously won Red Dot Awards are: Martin Pärn for the Martin table (1998), Hannes Unt for restaurant Kaerajaan's visual identity (2008), Julia Maria Künnap for baby high chair Mari (2010) and Kaidi Ploomipuu for carpet „Bog“ (2011) carried out in newWeave technology.
