According to the Australia Council’s latest newsletter, its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Board (ATSIAB) is set to promote Indigenous Australian music for the first time at the World Music Expo (WOMEX) in Germany next week. A specially commissioned CD, featuring artists such as Kerrianne Cox, Lou Bennett and the Pigram Brothers will be distributed at the event, and Australian record companies with particular interest in Indigenous music will attend. ‘WOMEX is a very significant opportunity for us to assess the European market and increase the international recognition of Indigenous musicians,’ commented ATSIAB Director Cathy Craigie. The board has also announced the appointment of two new members – Artistic Director of Brisbane’s Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts, Lafe Charlton, and the City of Melbourne’s Indigenous Arts Program Manager, Janina Harding.
