The Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) has recently announced the winners of the 2002 Governor General's Literary Awards, in the categories of fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction, children's literature (text and illustration) and translation. The Governor General's Literary Awards, which are funded, administered and promoted by the CCA, saw each laureate presented with a cheque for $15,000 and a specially-crafted copy of the winning book bound by master bookbinder Pierre Ouvrard. As well as receiving certificates presented by the Governor General, the CCA also provided each publisher with a $3,000 grant to support promotional activities for the winning book. 'The linking of the highest office in the land to great literary achievement makes Canada unique,' said the Governor General. 'We live our culture through its literature and arts - and through reading the remarkable books that are celebrated each year with the Governor General’s Literary Awards.' Collectively, the winning books represent the enormous wealth and breadth of our literature: diverse, thought-provoking and uniquely Canadian, added Canada Council Chairman Jean-Louis Roux.
