Creative New Zealand recently announced that it has worked in conjunction with the City Gallery Wellington to secure a place for Michael Stevenson's This is Trekka installation at the Venice Biennale 2003. This is Trekka is a celebration of New Zealand's only home grown production automobile. The installation will present a comparative study of industry and society in New Zealand during the 1960s and 1970s, and will use a fully restored Trekka as its centrepiece. New Zealand Commissioner in Venice, Jenny Gobs, says that the installation melds well with the theme of the 2003 Venice Biennale. 'It fits perfectly, because it explores the artistic, historical and social contexts in which art is produced,' she commented. While the Venice Biennale was established in 1895 and is now looking towards its 50th edition, this will be only the second time that New Zealand has been represented at the event. This is Trekka will be presented in the 18th century church, La Maddelena, which will reopen to the public, after a period of restoration, in time for the biennale.
