Director, University Museums

University of Sydney,
27 February 2003, Australia

Ref: E04/003437 The University Museums comprise three areas: the Macleay Museum (natural history, especially entomology; ethnography; scientific instruments; historic photographs), the Nicholson Museum (the only major collection in Australia devoted to the art and archaeology of the ancient western world) and the University Art Collection (Australian art, European painting, decorative arts and Japanese and Chinese prints). These collections attract increasing public recognition of their significance both in regard to research and teaching within the University and to the cultural life of the Australian community. This is an excellent opportunity for an outstanding person with initiative to raise the public profile of the collections; provide strategic leadership and management of the museums; develop and promote the use of collections in teaching and research; and streamline the diverse structure and operations of the three collections. The successful candidate must have demonstrated leadership skills; high level organisational, communication and interpersonal skills; the experience and ability to develop, implement and evaluate long term management plans; proven business, communication and community-networking expertise; and an undergraduate degree in an appropriate field. The candidate must also have considerable relevant experience in public museums and galleries at a middle/senior management level and demonstrated ability to liaise at a high level with senior University staff and relevant government and non-government officials and to develop an effective staff team environment. Postgraduate qualifications are highly desirable.
