NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS DEAN Reference No: NITA 1672 The Australian National University is seeking a person of outstanding calibre to appoint as Dean of the National Institute of the Arts (NITA). The Dean is the academic and administrative leader of the Institute and is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the management and supervision of its academic, financial and administrative affairs. The higher education sector in Australia is changing rapidly and The Australian National University is embarking on a period of substantial development. The successful applicant will have a record of managing and motivating people in a changing organisation to perform well and achieve outstanding results in an increasingly competitive marketplace. NITA is a leading institution for teaching and research in the visual arts and music. It offers the highest levels of staff/student contact within Australia and the greatest opportunities for staff and students to engage in the making of art and the performance of music. Currently NITA comprises the School of Art, the School of Music and the Australian Centre for Arts and Technology. NITA is currently engaged in a strategic planning process in which future directions are being canvassed including the creation of a third School or its equivalent. The Dean will be expected to play a crucial role in this process. Applicants should have a deep interest in and knowledge of the creative arts, entrepreneurial and management skills, empathy with artists and musicians, vision, leadership qualities and appropriate experience. A capacity and willingness to implement and/or develop EEO principles and policies is required. In consultation with the Directors of the Schools of Music and Art the successful applicant will be expected to articulate and communicate a coherent vision for NITA; to contribute actively to the development of ANU strategic directions; to promote the interests of NITA and of the University both nationally and internationally; and to enhance the already high reputation of NITA for teaching, research and community interactions. Appointment: The successful applicant will be offered an initial fixed-term appointment for a period of five years as Dean, with the possibility of a further term. An attractive remuneration package of up to approximately $160,000 per annum will be negotiated with the successful applicant. The University reserves the right to fill the position by invitation.
