Thirty-six works by 14 leading Australian artists have been selected for a major exhibition in October at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin's major contemporary art space. Face Up – Contemporary Art from Australia, will run from October 2 – January 4 as part of a six month program of contemporary Australian performance, literature and visual art in Berlin entitled 'Artsaustralia Berlin 03'. 'Artsaustralia Berlin 03 has proved itself as an important strategy in Australia’s long-term production of our contemporary arts,' said Alexander Downer, Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs. 'The forthcoming focus on visual arts in October will open vital new European markets for works created by Australian artists and follows on the success of our participation at the 2003 Venice Biennale and ARCO Madrid last year.' Australia Council Chief Executive Officer, Jennifer Bott, said: 'These exhibitions and presentations offer outstanding opportunities for 25 of our leading visual artists to present their talent and innovative work to highly informed audiences, develop important contacts with European curators, critics and collectors and develop their practice within an international context.'
