Te Waka Toi, the Maori arts board of Creative New Zealand, recently held its annual Te Waka Toi Awards evening to recognise outstanding contributions to Maori arts and culture. The theme for this year’s awards was 'composition' and the role it plays in the preservation of Maori culture. Elizabeth Ellis, Chair of Te Waka Toi, also announced the renaming of the awards in recognition of the late Ngati Porou Composer/Educator, Ngoi Pewhairangi. They will from now on be known as the Te Tohu Aroha mo Ngoi Kumeroa Pewhairangi Awards. For further information, visit Creative New Zealand HERE.
