Administrative Coordinator with international exp

Canadian Conference of the Arts,
17 October 2003, Canada

The Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) is looking for an administrative co-ordinator to manage the day to day activities of the secretariat of the International Network for Cultural Diversity (INCD), which is housed in the CCA's offices in Ottawa. The INCD has a global reach and works, through an active Steering Committee and a broadly based membership, to promote cultural policies that increase cultural diversity and to counter the homogenising effects of international trade agreements on culture and the arts. The basic functions of the INCD are as follows: • organise meetings on local, regional and international levels on diversity issues; • provide research, analysis and information about diversity issues; • lobby governments, intergovernmental agencies and multilateral fora; • ensure the voice of the cultural community is heard at trade negotiations; • facilitate networking and communication among members; • develop projects that work to implement the Founding Principles; • collaborate with other civil society movements. The individual we are looking for will have a solid background in administration, some international experience and a strong motivation to work on the INCD's issues. The job is a demanding one with some international travel required. The incumbent will be required to fundraise, write and edit a monthly newsletter, maintain the website and organise international events, liaise with members and the Steering Committee as well as provide basic administrative support for the INCD. The project team, of which the incumbent is a key player, also includes the Co-ordinator, based in Toronto, a South African organiser and the National Director of the CCA as well as occasional interns and contractors. In terms of qualifications, Canadian citizenship and fluent English are required as well as competence in either French or Spanish. The incumbent will have excellent communication and organisational skills and be proficient in most software packages. An understanding of cultural policy issues, particularly as they relate to trade agreements, development policies and the cultural infrastructure of other countries, would be an asset. The INCD requires its staff to take significant responsibility and to function with a high degree of competence in all its core activities, to work calmly under pressure and to display professional courtesy, diplomacy and cultural sensitivity. The start date is early November depending of the availability of the successful candidate. This is a term position extending to March 31, 2004 and renewable at that time.
