Reality Check: Time for a Period of 'Creative Consolidation'

International Journal of Arts Management,
04 November 2003, Canada

This journal article looks at the growth and accomplishments of the arts in Canada, with their focus on financial and geographic accessibility as well as the development of world-class talent, and addresses the challenges of the last decade. The article argues that the current decline in government funding and the plateau in audiences common to many countries suggests the need for a period of 'creative consolidation'. Among the issues that must be addressed by a new generation of better-trained, technologically savvy arts managers are governance, advocacy, audience development, consultation, collaboration and networking, and touring.
