02 February 2004, Australia

The Kuala Lumpur International Literary Festival will take place from July 29 to August 1, and is now calling for papers from writers the world over. The festival will comprise talks, panel discussions, book launches and creative writing workshops. It aims to put Malaysia on the world literary map with the view to making Kuala Lumpur an intellectual hub and a centre for high quality publishing. This year’s conference title is Evolving Faces: Identities and the Printed Page. It will explore the role of texts of all genres in reflecting political, social, cultural and economic transformations, enabling us to rethink our evolving identities. Conference papers might discuss, but are not limited to, national identity in a multicultural context, the English language and identity, teaching identity through literature, inherited resources, constraints and identity, or publishing and the limits of the printed page. Abstracts for a 20 minute paper are due by February 28. The Kuala Lumpur International Literary Festival is organised by Silverfish Books, the Australian High Commission, and the Malaysian Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language in association with the Malaysian National Library.
