New Zealand, You’re On The Air

Creative New Zealand has partnered with Radio New Zealand to offer all New Zealanders the opportunity to write and perform for radio. The result is the first ever Creative Writing and Community Drama Season 2004, an initiative Radio New Zealand producer Wayne Widdowson believes is long overdue. Widdowson believes ‘there are great New Zealand stories just waiting to be told’ and his job is to ‘point the mic towards them’. In doing so he hopes not only to make radio drama more accessible and entertaining to a wider audience but also to build a strong relationship between Radio New Zealand drama and emerging artists, groups and organisations working within the community. Plays, short stories and poetry will be considered, as long as the piece is short, snappy and speaks with a New Zealand voice. According to Widdowson, the season aims to reflect ‘the creativity, cultural diversity and imagination throughout the country’. Radio New Zealand will also be running creative writing and acting workshops adjacent to the season of domestic work, designed to boost opportunities for budding story tellers in the craft.
