Thanks to the partnership between Creative New Zealand and Antarctica New Zealand composer Gareth Farr and photographer Megan Jenkinson will travel to Antarctica during the summer as the 2005 Antarctic Arts Fellows, under the Artists to Antarctica Programme. The Artists to Antarctica Programme began in 1997 and is “an admirable example of how arts, science and the environment can come together in an imaginative way to support the creation of innovative New Zealand art,” says Elizabeth Kerr, Chief Executive of Creative New Zealand. Antarctica New Zealand CEO Lou Sanson says that the scheme provides Fellows with an opportunity to experience one of the last great wildernesses and that “the Arts Fellows interpret that inspiration and share their unique experience for the benefit of other New Zealanders.” Wellington composer Gareth Farr says, “I am particularly interested in the stories of great human endeavour, such as Robert Scott’s South Pole expedition and the emotions inspired by Antarctica. These stories and emotions have huge and dramatic potential to inspire powerful music that people can relate to.” His goal will be to explore the human stories associated with Antarctica. Auckland photographer Megan Jenkinson aims to focus on the colours of Antarctica. “I want to produce works of art about the colours and light in a landscape predominantly regarded in terms of its whiteness,” she said.
