The International Network for Cultural Diversity has issued a congratulatory statement in the wake of UNESCO's formal vote for cultural diversity, urging for renewed global commitment to the cause. The INCD and its member organisations celebrated UNESCO's approval of the Convention on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions, calling the 148 country-strong support for the document a "watershed moment in the history of the cultural diversity movement.” INCD Executive Director, Garry Neil, applauded the vote, but added that "there is much more to do." Neil called on the UNESCO member states who ratified the convention to include provisions of the new Convention in both territorial and global cultural agreements in order to achieve the 'promise' of the landmark document. "We need to collaborate against the continuing pressure from those who want trade in cultural goods and services to be covered fully under the World Trade Organisation and regional and bilateral trade treaties," he said. "We also need to ensure that developing countries have the resources they need to bring their stories, music and other artistic works to local and global audiences.” The INCD has been actively campaigning for a binding convention on cultural diversity since 2000. Its membership includes over 400 non-governmental cultural organisations in 71 countries. For more details, CLICK HERE. Visit the INCD online at: www.incd.net
