In a new report funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, it has been revealed that the area of Cape Dorset is the most 'artistic' municipality of Canada's rural regions. The report, created by Hill Strategies and published this month, name Cape Dorset as the clear winner, with one quarter of its labour force employed in the arts. The community has 110 artists from a total labour force of 485. The report classified artists as those who are: actors; artisans and craftspeople; conductors; composers and arrangers; dancers; musicians and singers; puppeteers, circus people and other performing artists; painters; sculptors; producers; directors; choreographers; other visual artists; and writers. Small and rural municipalities were defined as those areas with less than 50 000 residents. "There are significant concentrations of artists in small and rural municipalities in many areas of the country [which] demonstrates that the arts contribute to the quality of life and the social and economic vitality of many small and rural communities in Canada," the report said. Previous reports have indicated that 130 700 Canadians work as artists across the country, representing 0.8% of the overall labour force.
