In the multicultural context of contemporary European and world societies, the concern with equality is increasingly being complemented with a concern with difference. The concept of cultural citizenship , which responds to this development, has inspired a recent collection of essays published by Eurozine.

Contributors include Gerard Delanty, Rainer Bauböck, Ivaylo Ditchev, Charles Taylor, António Sousa Ribeiro and Axel Honneth, who agree in the need to stress that cultural citizenship remains an underdeveloped notion which will need to be further theorised to avoid its being merely an abstract term.
