Progress Europe report

Pro Helvetia,
22 August 2007, Switzerland

Is European culture in the midst of an identity crisis? Does it have a negative image? Can culture play a strategic role for the European Union, and what about cultural relations within Europe? 30 authors from a great diversity of cultural disciplines and perspectives took up these questions for the report 'Progress Europe'. Together, the articles provide a good overview of prevalent issues and opinions regarding Europe's cultural identity.
At the request of the "Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen" (ifa) in Stuttgart, Pro Helvetia participated in the publishing and financing of the report in that it contributed two essays on multilingualism in Europe and provided support for the French edition. Since Switzerland is not an EU member state, but is regularly quoted as a political and cultural role model for Europe, Pro Helvetia set great store on participating in this project. After all, cooperation between Swiss cultural practitioners and event organisers and their European counterparts is one of the Swiss Arts Council's key areas of activity. The target of the newly created publication series entitled "Kulturreport" (Cultural Report) is to raise the general European public's awareness of Europe as a cultural and not only political entity. The report has been published in German, French, English and Polish.
