The Australia Council for the Arts is improving its support for Australia’s literary infrastructure.
From 2010, the Australia Council’s literature key organisations funding will be open to established literary magazines with a national distribution, national service organisations and national genre-based organisations.

Australia Council director of literature Susan Hayes said that the new funding arrangements will help develop the infrastructure that underpins Australia’s creative literary talent.

‘We want to open up funding to a broader range of literary organisations to nurture new creative talents and increase collaboration in the sector,’ she said.

‘We expect the new key organisations category to support more great Australian literature being written and published,’ Ms Hayes said.

The new funding arrangements are based on significant research into Australia’s national literary infrastructure and consultations around the future of literature key organisations funding.

The Australia Council’s literature board is committed to providing the best ways to support Australia’s creative writers and to advance Australian literature.

The Australia Council currently supports 11 literary organisations through key organisations funding worth more than $522,300 in 2007-08. It is expected a similar amount will be available in the 2010 funding round.
