Total dedication to the process of discovery

26 January 2009, New Zealand

27 of New Zealand’s most outstanding young musicians will assemble in Nelson on 7th February for the annual Adam Summer School.  The School, a highlight of New Zealand’s musical calendar for 15 years, is managed by the New Zealand String Quartet Trust and has been sponsored by Denis and Verna Adam through the Adam Foundation since 1996.

Violinists, violists, cellists and pianists from around New Zealand will enjoy an intensive week of coaching and music-making, each group focusing on one substantial composition which they will present in two public concerts at the Nelson School of Music on Sunday 15th February.

“It’s like being on board ship” says pianist Diedre Irons, who has worked as tutor at the School a number of time with the members of the New Zealand String Quartet. “It’s very intense – a group of people totally dedicated to their music-making and the process of discovery. It’s also the perfect kick-off for the year for all of us, students and tutors.”

There are daily masterclasses open to the public and free of charge during the Summer School. They will be held at the NelsonSchool of Music at 8pm on Sunday 8th February and at 5.15pm on Monday 9th, Tuesday 10th, Wednesday 11th, Friday 13th and Saturday 14th February. Final concerts will be at 4pm and 8pm on Sunday 15th February, and admission to these is $8 per person.
