Press release regarding the Amendments to the Stage and Film Classification framework and the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts

Malta Council for Culture and the Arts,
24 January 2012, Malta

The Malta Council for Culture and the Arts (MCCA) expresses satisfaction at the amendments to the Stage and Film Classification framework proposed last Tuesday by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and the Environment. The MCCA has been one of the proponents of legislative change in this respect, and has over the past months worked very closely with the Ministry in suggesting alternatives to the existing classification framework. In particular, the setting up of a voluntary Guidance Board for theatre productions was suggested by the MCCA as a safeguard to artists wishing to seek guidance on the suitability of a theatre production for a particular age bracket.

The MCCA is in full agreement that theatre and other stage production become self-regulatory, as well as with the creation and regular updating of criteria and guidelines as to classification.

Furthermore the Guidance Board which shall be chaired by the Chairman of the MCCA, shall be responsible for creating a voluntary guidance process, the creation and updating of criteria, as well as the hearing of complaints from the public.

Artists are urged to take an active part in the consultative process relating to these proposed amendments.
