Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture,
09 February 2012, Botswana

National Languages Day is commemorated annually on the 21st February since 2008 after the United Nations declared 2008 as the International Year of Languages. Botswana then adopted the date as the official day to celebrate the diverse languages that are found in the country.

Some of the objectives of commemorating this important day include; creating awareness on the importance of documenting local languages, resuscitating and promoting the use of our diverse local languages by all citizens of Botswana, to create awareness on the importance of languages in socio-economic development and national unity and to showcase the diverse languages in the form of verbal presentations, performing arts and exhibitions.

The theme for the 2012 National Languages day is 'My Language, My Pride' translated into Setswana as 'Ke ipela ka teme yame'.

There will be various activities happening during the day in Bobonong and some of those include; presentation of messages using the different languages which include Sebirwa, Sesarwa, Ikalanga, Sekgatla and Sign langauge, storytelling in local languages, exhibitions of publications written in local languages and entertainment through poetry, songs, dance and drama and an overview of language status by the University of Botswana to mention a few.
