The “Protection of the creator as a cultural worker" was held at the headquarters of the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI) organized by the Copyright Council (CDA) of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

CDA's participation in an instance like this is "no accident" but it is one of the opportunities to pursue a line of work that is part of the its strategy, said the Director of CDA, Alfredo Scafati.

He recalled that Uruguay has been a pioneer in the interpretation of human rights and intellectual property and copyright limitations in libraries and archives, for the benefit of visually impaired people.
"Today we are called to discuss the needs of the original authors, creators of culture that often are disadvantaged compared to those who have greater prominence," he said.

This approach to the issue has not been discussed at the international level and for that reason the conclusions of the seminar will serve as an input for further work in the area of the World Intellectual Property Organization.

The coordinator of the program at the Copyright Development Division, Lorena Bolaños said that the purpose of the seminar is to acknowledge the essence of copyright, examine the rules and remedies, in addition to reviewing the minimum standards of protection.
