Council appointments for national cultural institutions

I am pleased to announce appointments to the councils of the Australian National Maritime Museum, the National Film and Sound Archive and the National Gallery of Australia.

The Honourable Margaret White AO has accepted appointment to the Council of the Australian National Maritime Museum for three years. Ms White is a highly respected former member of the Queensland Court of Appeal, a retired officer of the Royal Australian Naval Reserve, and has a deep and longstanding interest in maritime law and history.

Ms Toni Cody and Mr Peter Rose will join as members of the Board of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia for three-year terms. Ms Cody is a marketing and business consultant with wide-ranging experience advising arts organisations. Mr Rose is a senior executive with FOXTEL who has introduced many award-winning Australian TV dramas to our screens and held a range of high-level positions in the screen sector.

Mr Timothy Fairfax AC and Mr John Hindmarsh AM have been reappointed to the Council of the National Gallery of Australia, each for two-year terms.

Mr Fairfax has been an extremely generous philanthropist for many years, and has had a long history of service to the visual arts. Mr Hindmarsh brings significant business and finance skills and extensive governance experience to the Council. I am delighted that they have once again agreed to serve on the Council. Continuity on the Council will be important as the Gallery comes under a new directorship later in 2014.

I welcome all of these appointees who bring significant expertise and experience to the boards of these key cultural institutions that encourage more Australians to enjoy our rich cultural heritage.

I extend my thanks to the outgoing board members for their contributions including the outstanding service of Ms Patricia Amphlett OAM to the National Film and Sound Archive Board.

The Honourable Margaret White AO

Ms White served as Judge of the Court of Appeal and Trial Division and as Master of the Supreme Court of Queensland. Ms White was Deputy President of the Defence Force Discipline Appeals Tribunal and Commissioner for the Queensland Racing Commission of Inquiry. She is currently Chair of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust and previously served as Deputy Chancellor and Member of the Senate at the University of Queensland, and Chair of the Supreme Court of Queensland Library Committee, a statutory body.

Ms White was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2013 for distinguished service to the judiciary and to the law particularly in Queensland, as a leading contributor to legal education and reform, and to professional development and training.

Ms Toni Cody

Ms Cody is a marketing and business consultant with over 20 years of expertise in strategic planning, change management and branding. She has advised a number of arts organisations including the Australian World Orchestra, Richard Keddie Films, Eddie Wong Films, Wildheart Films and Art House Gallery. Ms Cody is currently on the Board of the Sydney Theatre Company and was previously a Director of the Australian Ballet, chairing its audit committee.

Mr Peter Rose

Mr Rose is a senior executive with FOXTEL, and is currently responsible for the FOXTEL Movies, Showcase and SoHo channels. He initiated the introduction of a number of successful and award-winning Australian television drama series including Love My Way, Tangle, Satisfaction and Cloudstreet. He has held a number of high-level industry positions including as Marketing Director of the South Australian Film Corporation; Head of Marketing and Distribution for Hoyts Theatres; Managing Director of Roadshow, Coote & Carroll; and Executive Vice President of International Marketing for United International Pictures.

Mr Timothy Fairfax AC

Mr Fairfax has extensive experience in the philanthropic sector and has made an outstanding contribution to the Australian community, filling a wide variety of community positions including in the arts sector.

Mr Fairfax currently holds positions on a number of boards, councils and foundations including President of the Queensland Art Gallery Foundation, Member of the Philanthropy Australia Council and Director of Australian Philanthropic Services. Mr Fairfax has previously served as Chair of the National Portrait Gallery Board, as a Trustee of the Queensland Art Gallery, Member and Treasurer of the Queensland Art Gallery Foundation, and Interim Chair of the National Gallery of Australia Council.

Mr John Hindmarsh AO

Mr Hindmarsh is a long-time supporter of the arts and has over 40 years’ experience in property, construction and business investment in Australia and overseas. Mr Hindmarsh is currently Chairman of Hindmarsh and Associated Companies, Chairman of Australian Capital Ventures Limited, Director of the Canberra Business Council, Director of Hands Across Canberra Charity and Deputy Chairman of Boundless All-Abilities Playground. Most recently Mr Hindmarsh has served as the Chair of the National Gallery of Australia Foundation and been an Honorary Ambassador for the Australian Capital Territory.
