A man who revitalized ancient Chamorro chants has been honored with the title Sainan Minenhalom Manllai Chamorro, or Master of Chamorro Chant.
The Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency yesterday awarded the title to Leonard Iriarte during a ceremony at the Jesus and Eugenia Leon Guerrero School of Business and Public Administration atrium at the University of Guam.
Iriarte started his journey to revitalize Chamorro chant after he went to the 1976 Festival of the Pacific Arts and saw that Chamorros didn't have a traditional art form, according to a Guampedia entry by local artist Judy Flores.
