Why we still need to support the NEA

Fifty years ago this week, under the umbrella of the newly formed National Council on the Arts, the NEA had its first appropriations bill signed, sealed and delivered. The first NEA grant was utterly free of acrimony: a $100,000 award to the American Ballet Theatre. It came at a fiscally vulnerable point in the nonprofit company's existence. The grant sent a message. This was work worth supporting.
