The arts can change our lives for the better, and it can happen in an instant. I’ve always wanted to encourage people to be open to that change, and at Tate, where I was director, I wanted to find new ways of opening art up to all. In my new role as chair of Arts Council England I have a similar mission, in an organisation founded to make the best of the arts available to everyone.
