Arts Council conference - Art and conflict

A one day conference - Wednesday 17th June 2009,
The Grand Opera House, Belfast

‘Art and Conflict’ provides a timely opportunity to explore the increasing reach and importance of the arts around the world in the process of healing and supporting societies in transformation. The conference theme also explores how artists represent conflict and its legacy.

Our keynote speaker, legendary human rights activist, Justice Albie Sachs together with
Vanessa September, Architect, will discuss the significant role art played in peace-building and the development of the constitutional court in South Africa. Acclaimed Magnum war photographer,
Jenny Matthews will share her experiences from war zones around the world. The line-up of top international speakers is completed by Zoe Lippett, Curator of the Northern Ireland Collection, Wolverhampton Museum, Sean Hillen, Artist, Omagh memorial sculpture ‘Garden of Light’ and closer to home Belfast poet and recipient of the Queen’s Medal for Poetry, Michael Longley, ‘in conversation’ with novelist, Glenn Patterson. The conference will be chaired by distinguished writer and broadcaster, Feargal Keane.
