Coordinator, Alternative Indicators of Well-Being for Melanesia Project

The Department of Statistics and the Vanuatu National Cultural Council are looking for a suitable person to coordinate a project to develop statistical indicators or measures of “well being” appropriate to the Vanuatu context, that recognise the traditional economy and other non-monetary values contributing to our quality of life, that can supplement the current GDP measure.

This person will report to the Government Statistician, in consultation with the Director of the Vanuatu National Cultural Council.

Terms of Reference:
1) Manage all aspects of the project to develop alternative indicators to measure the
traditional economy and other non-monetary values contributing to quality of life in
Vanuatu
2) Coordinate and facilitate liaisons between stakeholders in the project, including the
Depts of Statistics of the MSG countries, the SPC and the UN and other multilateral
agencies
3) Organise a series of subregional workshops to develop the concepts and tools
required
4) Undertake research as required
5) Write and/or produce policy and discussion papers from the project
6) Represent the project locally and internationally
7) Perform other tasks as directed by the project coordinating committee.
Position Requirements:
1) A university degree (preferably at Masters level) in either statistics, economics,
other social sciences, or a directly related area
2) Five years of progressively responsible, job-related experience in statistics or in a
sustainable development-related area
3) Experience in the development or use of statistical indicators for sustainable
development
4) Experience in designing and implementing projects in related areas
5) Working experience in Vanuatu or another Melanesian country with a good
knowledge of Melanesia cultures
The consultancy is for one year at least, with probable extension for up to 3 years.
The fee will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
