The Secretary of Culture and National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) create the first Key Indicators for the culture sector

Ministry of Culture,
03 February 2022, Mexico

This data will provide a summary of part of the economic and social dynamism of the sector, and are additional to the Mexican Culture Satellite Account.

They are aligned with the Sectoral Programme for Culture 2020-2024 and are reported in the Sustainable Development Goals Information System.

In an unprecedented event for the Secretary of Culture of the Government of Mexico, the Governing Board of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), chaired by Dr. Graciela Márquez Colín, approved the first two Key Indicators of the culture sector to form part of the National Catalogue of Indicators.

The indicators were formulated in close collaboration between both institutions and aim to show, in synthesis, part of the economic and social dynamism of the country's culture sector, thus supporting and promoting the defence and guarantee of cultural rights.

This will allow the objectives of the Ministry of Culture to be advanced in order to leave no one behind, as it will make it possible to gain an in-depth understanding of the economic and social dimensions of Mexico's cultural diversity and heritage.

With these new indicators, it will be possible to identify:

  • Real growth of the gross value added of the culture sector.
It provides an insight into the behaviour of economic activities related to culture and their year-on-year change. This data, together with the percentage of GDP reported by the Mexican Culture Satellite Account, facilitates a better understanding of the relevance and variability of the contribution of cultural activity in the country, which means that better elements will be available for decision-making in terms of cultural public policies.
  • Growth of filled jobs in the cultural sector.
This refers to the review of the flow of jobs in the cultural sector from one year to the next. This indicator is of great importance as it allows monitoring variations in the workforce in the cultural field. For example, among the data it provides, it shows that the relationship between economic growth and a higher employment rate is not always true.
